At West Yarner we recognise that Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides a range of visual, tactile and sensory experiences in response to the stimulus. It enables children of all abilities to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.
We would like to inspire and engage pupils by equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment and create their own works of art. We show appreciation to their pieces of work and value all children’s achievements. As the children progress through the school, they develop a deeper understanding of Art and Design, exploring past, present and local artists such as Yvonne Coomber, David Hockney, and the impact they have on different cultures and societies. The National Curriculum for Art & Design aims to ensure that all pupils produce creative work, explore their ideas and record their experiences. Children develop skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, printing and craft and design techniques. They will evaluate and analyse creative works using specific vocabulary and learn about great artists, craft makers and designers from various historical periods.
In Design and Technology, we encourage children to use their creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve relevant problems, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Through a coherently sequenced curriculum, children will learn the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to be ambitious in an increasingly technological world. Children will also learn critical thinking skills as they test, critique, and evaluate their projects.
