The aim of the curriculum is to provide high-quality historical education that enables pupils to gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain's past and that of the wider world.
We deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all our pupils in order to maximise outcomes for every child. Our curriculum supports the children in increasing and developing their historical skills, concepts, knowledge and attitudes. It helps the children to develop better understanding of the present in the context of the past. Learning is extended and strengthened as children progress through our school to ensure knowledge retention and the use of required vocabulary. We use historical evidence to awaken children's curiosity, in turn generating quality discussions, debates, knowledge retrieval and development. Through their study of History, children will understand the complexities of people's lives; the process of change; the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identities.
Our history learning provides a motivating stimulus for writing, enabling children to empathise with people of other eras, discuss their opinions on world events and record and develop their own understanding whilst improving their literacy skills. History plays a vital role in reinforcing our British Values as we reflect on events, eras or individuals and their legacy, discussing what we can learn from them and how they affect us today. Our History learning is enriched by school trips to Plymouth Hoe, Exeter museum, Buckland Abbey and national events e.g. Holocaust Memorial Day and VE day.
