PE curriculum helps our children to meet four fundamental needs of our school: healthy relationships, emotional resilience, tolerance and respect and ambition
The aim of the curriculum is to develop confidence in a broad range of physical activities. Our children are learning to be physically active for sustained periods of time, engage in competitive sports and know how to make healthy choices.
We give children the tools and understanding required to make a positive impact in their own physical health and well-being. Through team sports we encourage and model expected behaviours, so our children can work towards more positive relationships. The experience of winning and losing, working in a team, sharing equipment, learning and following the rules of different games supports the children’s social development.
The children are encouraged to know the importance of good health which includes getting plenty of exercise and a healthy diet. This is taught in a cross curricular way with Science and PSHE. During the PE sessions the children continue to build on and further develop previously learnt skills such as running, jumping, and catching as well as develop agility, balance and coordination.
Pupils will also understand how physically demanding activities develop health and fitness. The children also have the opportunities to engage in short sporting activities during their mini breaks, which are planned around the children’s individual needs.
Our children also have the opportunity to take the swimming sessions in either the local pool or Finlake leisure centre, where some learn basic water strokes and water safety skills and others build upon a range of varied strokes for greater distances. We aim to ensure that all children leave our school able to swim and remain safe around water.
