Religious Education has a significant role for the development of pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. It promotes respect and open-mindedness towards others with different faiths and beliefs and encourages pupils to develop their sense of identity and belonging through self-awareness and reflection. We celebrate diversity and are committed to prepare our children to live in a multicultural world which is rich in faiths and beliefs. We teach the children to develop an appreciation for the expression of beliefs, cultural practices and influence of principle religions and worldviews in the local, national and wider global community.
When teaching RE we use the school's progression grids to ensure that the children are familiar with all the faiths and religions and we support our teaching of RE with a range of artefacts, and visits to the local places of worship (e.g Exeter Mosque and Totnes Church). We also recognise and commemorate special events such as Remembrance Day, HMD, Diwali, Christmas, Easter and Ramadan.
When leaving our school, we expect the children to have a good knowledge and empathy for people of any faith and understand their culture. We promote the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our pupils so that they can make sense of religious and non-religious beliefs, understand the impact of these beliefs and make connections between them.
